Chappell started as a music publishing company at 124 New Bond Street in 1811. In 1819 Beethoven sent them three sonatas for publication. A little later the business moved to 50 New Bond Street which would become the home of Chappell Studios in the sixties and seventies.

In 1964 fire gutted the building so it gave the company the chance to completely rebuild including a new recording studio.  In 1965 John Timperley was asked to set up the new studio and was subsequently engaged as manager when it opened in 1967.
