In 1972, John Wolfe, the live sound engineer for rock band The Who was given a budget of £40,000 to go and set up a studio.  He eventually found an old church hall, built in 1908. It was a dilapidated building with broken windows and a leaky roof and had to be completely renovated. £350,000 later it opened  as 'The Kitchen'  but later re-named as Ramport Studios. Although originally intended for the personal use of the band, the high build cost meant that the studio would become a commercial facility and quickly established itself as one of the top independent studios in London.

Original Ramport Equipment :

Console: The first of the two Helios desks that would be installed in the studio in the coming years.

In 1976 the Helios was sold off and bought by Pebble Beach Sound Recorders in Worthing.

It was replaced by the first of two  Neve desks that would be installed in Ramport in the following years.

1977 -   The  Neve 8088 black 40 input console arrives. Links up with 2 x 24 track 3M and a 16 track Studer. This Neve desk went to Bearsville in Woodstock USA in 1985 (sold in 2003) and eventually ended up with Neil Finn from Crowded House.

In 1983 the studio was bought by Virgin records and renamed Townhouse 3.

1985 - The Helios 40/32 type 79  was moved to Townhouse 3 from the main Townhouse complex. This was the last Helios console to be built.

This Helios was sold to Tony Arnold in 1988 and replaced by a Neve 8078.

1994  -  Townhouse 3 has a Neve 8078

1995 -  Townhouse 3 was closed by EMI and the  studio sold in 1996.
