A HISTORY

Roundhouse Recording Studios were opened in 1975 by producer Gerry Bron. A long time user of Lansdowne studios, Gerry headhunted Peter Gallen and Ashley Howe from Lansdowne as manager and engineer respectively.

Built into the basement of an office block next to Camden's legendary Roundhouse venue, the Roundhouse studio was designed by Eddie Veale and consisted of one large rectangular room with a fairly high ceiling and a fairly dead acoustic, with the centre of the room being liver than the edges.

1975

The control room was designed for quadraphonic work and was equipped with an L-shaped 36 input Cadac desk, Studer tape machines, Cadac monitors and 4 EMT echo plates.

By 1980 the control room had had a major refit and a 48 channel Harrison desk had been installed. This was positioned sideways to the studio area to allow for a wider spread of the main monitors. These were now customised Eastlake TM3s driven by HH power amps and voiced with White room equalisers. A mixing room was also added at this time, designed by Peter Osborne and architect Ken Worrel, this was squeezed into a space previously occupied by a rest room and some of the air-conditioning plant.

The mix room had a 32 channel Harrison desk featuring Harrison's "Autoset" automation. Tape machines were Studer for 24 track and stereo, monitoring on JBL 4343s.
Roundhouse has a good claim to the title of Britain's first digital studio. As part of the 1980 refit they took delivery of  3M 32 track  and 4 track recorders and a digital editing package. The Townhouse cutting rooms had also taken delivery of a 4 track 3M at the same time, so there was at least one cutting room in London that they could use! The Beat's single "Mirror in the Bathroom" was one of the first all digital recordings to enter the chart.

Another technical first for Roundhouse was their home-brewed Cuemix system, a cordless foldback system giving each musician his or her own mini mixer.

Both Harrison desks had been replaced by SSLs by 1985; also that year there were plans for expansion into the Roundhouse venue next door but these plans never came to fruition.

The Roundhouse at Saffron Hill

In common with other London studios the Roundhouse ran into problems in the late eighties as studios rates fell and property rental prices soared, eventually forcing the closure of the Camden site and a move to Hatton Garden, where rents were considerably lower.

The new premises were an old jewellery factory at 91-94 Saffron Hill. The equipment from the Camden studio was added to and the resulting studio had three control rooms all featuring SSL desks. Two recording areas were "shared" as needed. The control rooms were all designed by Sean Davies and were based on the very popular mix room at the Camden premises, comparatively small but all with Genelec monitoring and accurate acoustics.
