Keary (Thermionic Culture) build Dean Street Studio (47 Dean
Street) in 1964, the space being the previous home of Radio
Atlanta. The premises were leased and they had to move
in 1965 to 488
Old Kent Road, the start of Maximum Sound.
the clever bloke that he is, Vic built the valve studio desk
himself based on
the EMI Redd series that he had worked on at Landsdowne Studios
He had already
developed a philosophy which influenced his approach to design
and acquisition of equipment, namely that the transistor’s entry
into the studio was a step backwards sonically and that the
valve sounded so much better.
Studios where bought in 1968 by Manfred Mann.
June 1970 - 20/16
custom desk designed by Pete Walsh. 8 & 4 Track Scully
machines - Fairchild
spring reverb - EMT plates. In November 1971 a Scully
16 track was added. The studio was still called Maximum Sound
at this point.
|In 1977 the studio had an API desk and 24 track Studer tape machine. Pye Compressors - A&D outboard|
In the 80s they had a Harrison Series 32 desk.
In 1982 Manfred Mann still owned Studio Two and Peter Hammond (engineer/producer with PWL) took over Studio One. In 1987 he sold his share in the Workhouse to Pete Waterman (Stock Aitken Waterman).
In the late 1980s a major fire destroyed part of the studios.
In 1996 the site was bulldozed to make way for a super market.
